Fokus Prize: Karin Reichmuth

In 2020, Karin Reichmuth was unanimously selected by a jury as the winner of the Glarner Kunstverein Focus Prize. A solo exhibition at Kunsthaus Glarus accompanies this award.

The artist creates sculptural works, paintings, and collages. Her works reference settings or places often linked to certain life stages and the atmospheres they evoke. She engages objects and materials in a reflexive way, using conceptual means to transform them into various formats depending on the choice of material. These works, highly varied in appearance depending on their materiality, are often influenced by circumstances specific to the settings. The artist sees her developmental and working process as a way of transforming and liberating her work from such perceptual processes. At the same time, her artistic transformations always have an element of humor.
One could say that stone is a prominent material in the artist’s work. Over the past several years, Reichmuth has devoted herself tirelessly to this material, which is used less frequently today, achieving a remarkable degree of craftsmanship as a result. This knowledge of her craft allows her to precisely transfer socially relevant themes into stone in a contemporary and pop-cultural manner. Her skills afford her a different perspective on the material.

In placing her sculptures in a given space, composition and playful presentations are important to the artist. Accordingly, she is developing a scenario for displaying her works in the exhibition space. A current series of intuitive, abstract paintings, presented in new frames, will also be shown. Presented together, a sense of tension is created between the paintings and the works made of stone.
