Sammlung
Collections grow organically, with an eye toward the future and the past. They record various histories and are created through coincidences, pragmatism, subjective interests, or through speculation, and are determined by given material conditions. Perhaps they are representative precisely because of these contradictions and an eclecticism that brings together what is incongruous and contradictory. Establishing its own collection has been one of Glarner Kunstverein’s primary objectives for over a century since its founding in 1870. Acquisitions focused primarily on works by contemporary Swiss artists. Today, these reflect not only an exemplary record of Swiss art historical developments and their reception but they are also a part of the (exhibition) history of the Kunsthaus itself. For one month, Kunsthaus Glarus will present works from the collections of Glarner Kunstverein in all its exhibition spaces. The exhibition focuses on acquisitions made after the opening of the Kunsthaus, constructed in 1952, and in particular on works collected since the 1990s. For the first time in a long time, the entire Kunsthaus is devoted exclusively to exhibiting the collection.
