Caroline Bachmann – 58 av. J.-C.

The panorama of the Jura between the Rhine and Rhone stretches over eight canvases. 58 av. J.-C., a history painting without people. Representatively, twelve fires attest to civilization in the distant history of Switzerland: The fires of the Roman wars burn according to Julius Caesars De bello gallico. The past is fiction. Painting originates in the present and possibly points to a post-apocalyptic future. In the past, women were physically unsuitable for mastering the highest of all genres, history painting. For a long time they were not important enough to appear in the portrait galleries. Caroline Bachmann's pictures oppose such a rigid genre hierarchy of painting, not least linked to gender images, without didactically disassembling it. Rather, the categories serve as models, as adopted orders: religious images, portraits, still lifes, landscapes; a keyboard that leads away from the conceptual image. Caroline Bachmann’s solo exhibition provides an overview of the artist’s painterly work since 2014. Accompanying the exhibition there will be released a booklet with texts Didier Semin, Fabrice Stroun and Judith Welter.
