Heimspiel, a triennial, cross-cantonal exhibition format, offers a platform for contemporary art from Eastern Switzerland and presents artists from the cantons of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden, Glarus, St. Gallen, Thurgau, as well as from Liechtenstein and Vorarlberg. As a canton in Eastern Switzerland, Glarus has participated since 2018 and this year also serves as a venue for the first time. The 2021 exhibitions will be held at Kunsthaus Glarus, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen, Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Kunsthalle Appenzell, and Kunstraum Dornbirn. Unlike in previous years, the curators of the institutions will develop the exhibitions from this year forward without an outside jury pre-selecting works.

The Heimspiel exhibition at Kunsthaus Glarus presents works by artists who examine conventions in everyday social structures. The selected positions deal critically with the present situation today and question the various ways in which materials are manifested. In doing so, existing normative forms of expression are considered anew. Which socio-political problems arise if social conventions and established cultural ideas are not constantly renegotiated and changed according to current developments and needs? In order to reflect on the existing state of affairs, the artists allude to ideological structures linked to specific, underlying spatial and media conditions.

Kunsthaus Glarus makes the most of this opportunity to bring together artists from all participating regions within the framework of Heimspiel and make them accessible to local and international audiences.
